The Power of an Epsom Salt Bath: Relax, Recover, Rejuvenate

Spa setting with candles, lotion, and bowls on a wooden stool by a bathtub. Cozy, relaxing atmosphere with natural tones.

There was a time when taking a bath was the last thing I wanted to do. I was all about quick showers—get in, get out, and move on with my day. But that changed when I started preparing my body for pregnancy.

While I was fit, I wasn’t holistically healthy. My menstrual cycles were irregular, and I knew that if children were going to be part of my husband’s and my future, I needed to get my body in balance. That’s when I sought the help of a holistic chiropractor in Austin, by the name of Jeff Ulery, of Whole Body Health. After sharing my goal with him, he gave me three simple recommendations:

  1. Eliminate corn and dairy (because my body was showing signs of intolerance)

  2. Prioritize sleep—aim for 7-9 hours each night

  3. Take 2-3 Epsom salt baths per week for 30 minutes

The first two changes were easy, but baths?! I hated sitting in a tub and I told him so. Jeff explained that despite being "healthy," my body was in a constant state of stress from always being on the go, working, achieving, and never slowing down. His exact words? "You’re in a jungle being chased by a lion, and that’s not an environment for pregnancy."

His prescription? Forced chill time. Regular Epsom salt baths would help me relax, reset my nervous system, and get my menstrual cycle back on track.

At first, 30 minutes felt like an eternity. But before long, I found myself craving my baths—hot water, Epsom salt, bubbles (of course!), and pure relaxation. And sure enough, within a few months, my cycle became regular, and I got pregnant.

All that to say—I am a huge believer in the power of Epsom salt baths. I take them on a regular basis and my kids have been taking them since they could sit up in a bathtub.

Precautions to Keep in Mind

While Epsom salt baths are generally safe and beneficial, there are a few precautions to keep in mind:

1. Pregnancy & Nursing

  • Generally Safe – Many pregnant women find Epsom salt baths help with swelling, muscle aches, and relaxation.

  • Consult Your Doctor – If you have pregnancy complications, high blood pressure, or are at risk for preterm labor, check with your doctor before soaking.

  • Avoid Overheating – Keep bath water warm, not hot (under 100°F) to prevent raising your body temperature too high.

2. Dehydration & Dizziness

Epsom salt baths can increase sweating and detoxification, which may lead to dehydration. Always drink water before and after your bath to stay hydrated.

3. Skin Sensitivities & Allergies

If you have sensitive skin, eczema, or open wounds, test a small amount first to ensure no irritation occurs. Consider adding oatmeal or coconut oil for extra skin soothing.

4. Blood Pressure & Heart Conditions

Soaking for too long or in very hot water can lower blood pressure, leading to dizziness or fainting. Keep baths between 20-30 minutes and avoid extreme heat.

5. Kidney Disease & Certain Medications

  • People with kidney disease should consult a doctor, as the body may struggle to process excess magnesium from the salts.

  • If you’re on certain medications (like diuretics or antibiotics), check with your healthcare provider before regular Epsom salt baths.

How to Safely Enjoy Your Epsom Salt Bath

For most people, Epsom salt baths are a safe, natural way to relax and recover—just be mindful of these precautions.

  1. Use warm (not hot) water

  2. Limit soaking time to 20-30 minutes

  3. Stay hydrated before and after

  4. Get up slowly to avoid dizziness

  5. If pregnant, check with your doctor first
